America's Warrior Partnership and Immuta Join Forces to Improve Veteran Care Through Data Analysis

Following a Successful Hackathon, National Philanthropic Organization Looks to Act on Insights Revealed In Valuable Data

America’s Warrior Partnership, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering communities to empower veterans and Immuta, the unified data platform for the world’s most secure organizations, today announced a successful hackathon. The event took place over three days on the weekend of December 9-11, 2017, with the goal of analyzing vast amounts of data gathered by America’s Warrior Partnership to inform future data collection methods and reveal hidden insights.

DataKind, a data management company focused on social change and staffed by volunteer data scientists, Miner & Kasch, a data science services firm, and the University of Maryland also joined the event, offering their time to mine for useful information in the nonprofit’s rich database.

This event represents a generous effort by our partners to help us in our mission. We are always searching for ways to serve veterans better. We believe that data analytics and predictive analysis will unlock insights that help us to amplify our impact. By identifying key data points and then applying in-depth analysis, we hope to identify issues early on and resolve them before they become problems for our veterans.

“This event represents a generous effort by our partners to help us in our mission. We are always searching for ways to serve veterans better. We believe that data analytics and predictive analysis will unlock insights that help us to amplify our impact,” said Dannielle Pope, Director of Innovative Technology for America’s Warrior Partnership. “By identifying key data points and then applying in-depth analysis, we hope to identify issues early on and resolve them before they become problems for our veterans.”

America’s Warrior Partnership supports veterans by empowering their communities. Their community-based program helps community organizations take a proactive approach to serving their local veterans. In 2015, America’s Warrior Partnership created WarriorServe™, a proprietary data management tool purpose-built to meet the specific needs of veterans and the agencies that serve them.

“Our team and the community organizations we work with use WarriorServe™ to share information and make informed, data-driven decisions,” said Roger Woodworth, executive director at the Veterans One-stop Center of Western New York. “The reporting functionality allows us to work together, as a community, to better understand our veterans, identify their needs and adopt solutions that enhance their lives.”

The insights collected from the December Hackathon will be used to provide better services. The hackathon sought to answer a number of questions, such as can we predict which veterans will classify themselves as struggling—without actually asking the question? Can we place veterans at job opportunities more effectively by taking public transportation factors into consideration? Can we better predict which veterans will need the most help in the months and years ahead?

“America’s Warrior Partnership is a progressive organization that understands the role data can play in better serving those who served our country,” said Steven Touw, CTO, Immuta. “We’re proud to play our part. Our technology freed volunteers to securely access and work with the organization's data so that they could quickly reveal key insights that might dramatically improve veteran care. We will continue to partner with innovative organizations that use data to serve the better good.”

The full results of the hackathon will be published in early 2017. To follow this initiative, and to see the outcomes, please subscribe at http://www.americaswarriorpartnership.org/news/.

About America’s Warrior Partnership:

America’s Warrior Partnership is a national nonprofit dedicated to empowering communities to empower veterans.  They accomplish their mission through offering community integration programs, education, mentoring, technology and partnerships.  America's Warrior Partnership has developed a program, Community Integration, that when implemented, leverages all community assets for the veterans of that community. At its heart, Community Integration is a program of collaboration combined with a philosophy that "one size fits one" -- the idea that each veteran must be addressed as an individual person, holistically. While some programs are designed around problems such as homelessness, unemployment or ill health, Community Integration is designed around the veteran.

Rather than compete with existing organizations that offer excellent resources, even if on a limited scale or directed at only a single problem, America's Warrior Partnership provides the tools and the training necessary for communities to form collaborations to assist veterans will all their needs. In doing so, partner communities learn how to advocate and collaborate for their veterans.
